The Kellogg Hub building has now received official certification as a Passivhaus, making it a first for an Oxford College and Oxford University. CBG were appointed as Passivhaus consultant and M&E designers for this scheme, which includes a new student café and common room, and a commercial kitchen.
The building, which features high levels of thermal insulation (250mm for walls) and air tight construction, is predicted to achieve a space heating demand of below 13kWh/m2/yr, a tiny fraction of the average UK building. Apart from the building fabric, this has also been achieved through careful design of the services, including the ventilation system- which is fully demand-controlled to meet the needs of fluctuating occupancy, and low-energy LED lighting.
