St Michael and All Angels is a Grade II* listed building in Macclesfield, Chesire. CBG were approached by the client because the church was overdue an improved lighting scheme. Existing fittings added over the years were often oversized, produced uncomfortable glare, and were ineffective for both services and performances. They also failed to highlight the building’s prominent architectural features and lacked proper controls.
In 2023, CBG designed a new lighting scheme to address these issues while providing the flexibility required for worship, concerts, and community events. The system is built around track-mounted spotlights at triforium level, offering both general and accent lighting for services and events. A new DALI control system allows the lighting to be tailored to suit various needs, from services to concerts and recitals.
The design avoided unnecessary damage to the historic fabric, with new penetrations introduced only where essential. Key liturgical and architectural features – including the altars, lecterns, sanctuary, and tombs – were thoughtfully highlighted. The overall structure of the church is now enhanced through ceiling uplights, wall washes, and discreet backlighting.
CBG worked closely with the client to ensure the end result was a success and that the previous lighting issues were resolved. The new lighting scheme has transformed the space: it now offers a more reverent atmosphere for worship, improved functionality for performers, and significantly enhanced aesthetics. The use of energy-efficient LED lighting supports the church’s sustainability goals while reducing both energy consumption and ongoing costs.
Overall, the project was a great success and we are proud to have revitalised this historic place of worship for the local community through our thoughtful lighting design.
