Meet some of our people
Buildings are for people, and our people love to make buildings work for others
Our team of more than 60 staff, based in Oxford and London, will bring ingenuity, elegant design and enthusiasm to your project. We are independent and wholly owned by our directors who all actively take part in our projects. Many of us are chartered engineers and members of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.
Andrew Payne (Managing Director)
Andy’s hands-on approach means you’ll find him getting stuck in at design team meetings as well as leading the team on site. He goes out of his way to nurture great working partnerships with clients: “How else can I thoroughly understand what’s needed?” he says.
From minor alterations to major capital schemes, you will benefit from his huge engineering experience and his flair for getting it right. Andy has the knack for understanding a client’s needs without over complicating things. “I particularly have a dislike for over-engineering that no one understands.” When he’s not creating fabulous indoor environments, Andy likes to get out onto the water to sail. “CBG have led us through the complexities of the relevant sustainability sections of the planning requirements. Led by Andy Payne they have been highly responsive and I have welcomed their positive and helpful dialogue with our contractors. We would recommend Andy and his team” Igloo Developments Ltd
Nassif Bahou (Director)
Nassif’s mantra is 1. no challenge too big, 2. ensure quality of service and 3. never miss a deadline. No wonder our clients love him! His practical experience in the public and private sectors and his positive attitude means he has a record number of repeat commissions and satisfied clients.
He says: “You have to ask: how will this building work in 10, 20, 30 years’ time? So I look really closely at how the details work together: power, lifts, lighting, security, communication, the lot.” Nassif’s attention to detail and regulatory understanding has enabled him to successfully complete major redevelopments at Thames Valley Police and at railway stations including London Paddington. Nassif is especially passionate about health and safety.
Alas, Nassif’s rugby- and football-playing days are a thing of the past. Now you’ll find him coaching on the touchline.
“Managing public money to maintain and develop our facilities, we need to be confident that our suppliers are giving value for money and getting results. CBG have a solid reputation and are always focused on the long-term best interests of the force.” Head of Maintenance, Thames Valley Police
Matt Bumpass (Director)
What you need from an electrical designer is precision, a quality Matt has in bucketloads.
Whatever project he works on; railway stations, data centres, airports, residential, educational, he’ll apply the same rigorous principles of efficiency, efficiency, efficiency.
He’s got real imagination and skill in designing power distribution, standby and mains conditioning systems, lighting and fire alarm. Combine this with his understanding of building services and his experience of working with architects and multidisciplinary design teams, with Matt on your side project co-ordination will be smooth. “I just love putting it all together,” he says.
Be in no doubt, you’re in safe hands with Matt; he’s a second-degree black belt in taikwando.
“Outstanding job! The standard of workmanship and attention to detail is first class. The benchmark has been set on the standards that we will require on all future schemes.” Building Surveyor, Network Rail
Paul Tomlinson (Director)
Paul has 25 years’ experience designing mechanical services in public and private sector projects. He is passionate about designing energy-efficient, carbon-neutral systems. Paul quickly gets to grips with a client’s challenges and constraints. He uses his spatial imagination and understanding of functionality to find the best solution. He takes on CDM co-ordination, project management, condition surveys and mentors graduate engineers.
Paul says: “I especially love working on education projects. If you give kids a spectacular learning environment, they can be inspired by it. I’m particularly proud the job we did at Oxford High School.”
Last year Paul was thrilled to have a spotted flycatcher nesting in a tree on his allotment.
“It is the quality of design and building that we hope to achieve for all of our new building projects” Head of Property Services, Wheatley Park School
Graham Woodroofe (Director)
When it comes to residential, education and heritage projects, Graham’s the man you need.
He has nearly three decades of engineering experience built on a solid foundation in the construction industry. Working closely with clients, architects and structural engineers, his skill in co-ordination and attention to detail will get spectacular results. In addition to spearheading our IES and BIM expertise, Graham was our lead director on Building Schools for the Future projects which are achieving low energy, sustainable performance. Graham is director in charge of several long-term university frameworks including Oxford and Warwick.
Graham’s working life is steeped in complexity and detail, so at home he enjoys life’s simpler pleasures: his family and cricket. Howzat?
“Immaculately detailed throughout and with simplicity in plan, this beautiful “floating” building has a wonderful ephemeral quality rare in architecture.” RIBA judge on the refurbishment and extension of a Grade II Listed Manor house
Chris Dicks (Associate Director)
Chris has a smorgasbord of electrical skills on his menu.
His detailed understanding of lighting systems and controls, fire alarm, audio-visual and ICT networking is in great demand in both new-build projects and historic refurbishment.
His quest for energy-efficiency and flair for detailed design on large scale projects has resulted in a number of awards. Schools, places of worship, transport, residential, historic, commercial… Chris’s sparky imagination has been applied to them all.
“Bristol NHS aspire to be a lead player in combating climate change. Chris and his team are helping us towards this.Their excellent building services knowledge and ability to deliver an Energy Awareness Programme in a clear and approachable way had a positive impact. We hope our scheme will be the template for others to follow.” NHS Bristol

Anthony McGrath (Associate Director)
Anthony joined CBG in 2008 and was quickly promoted; we love his enthusiasm and diligence when designing sustainable electrical schemes. He understands the practical buildability of a design and always seeks to create flexible and efficient electrical schemes. This is especially important in his work in education, civic and defence projects. Ant is a skilled communicator and enjoys working with clients to develop practical and contemporary results.
Ant enjoys an active lifestyle; he's a quadrathlete and an accomplished wakeboarder (that's a bit like water skiing, snow boarding and surfing all rolled into one.)
"We have worked with Anthony and his team for the past year on various projects. Anthony is a capable and reliable engineer; responsive and creative. His attentive attitude has been of real benefit to our projects. Information from him and his team is consistently produced to high standards and in good time." ArchitecturePLB
